RCS vs SMS Cost in India: Which Is Cheaper for Businesses?

At Messagify's published rates, an SMS and an RCS message cost about the same. Which works out cheaper depends on how long your messages are, how much of your audience can actually receive RCS, and what each message needs to achieve.

For a short text alert, SMS and RCS cost about the same per message. Messagify's published starting rates are ₹0.12 per SMS and ₹0.13 per RCS message. SMS works out cheaper for short messages that every phone must receive. RCS can be cheaper for long or Unicode messages, because SMS splits those into several billable segments while a long RCS message is billed once. In practice, the lowest total cost usually comes from sending RCS to the customers who can receive it and falling back to SMS for everyone else.

This guide explains how each channel is billed, the costs that don't show up in the per-message rate, and how to work out which mix is cheaper for your own audience.

How SMS is priced in India

Business SMS is priced per message, but a message is a segment, not whatever you type. A single SMS holds up to 160 characters in the standard GSM 7-bit alphabet, or up to 70 characters if it contains Unicode characters such as Hindi, Tamil or emoji. Longer messages are split into segments of 153 GSM characters or 67 Unicode characters, then joined back together on the phone. If your SMS rate applies per segment, a 300-character English message costs two units and a 200-character Hindi message costs three.

SMS also has fixed compliance costs. Every business must register on DLT before sending. Vi and BSNL list the Principal Entity registration fee as ₹5,000, one-time and non-refundable. Headers and templates must be registered too, and promotional SMS only reaches people who haven't blocked that category through their DND preferences.

How RCS is priced

RCS Business Messaging is priced by the carriers. Google's billing documentation says traffic is billed according to each carrier's rate card, and billable events are recorded when a message is delivered, not when it is sent. How you are billed depends on the category you choose when you create your RCS agent, and that category can't be changed later:

  • Non-conversational: for agents that mostly send one-way messages such as OTPs, alerts and offers. Each delivered message is billed individually. In November 2025 Google merged its older Basic Message and Single Message types into this one category.
  • Conversational: for agents built for back-and-forth exchanges such as bookings or product discovery. If the user replies within 24 hours, the whole exchange is billed as one conversation at a flat rate. Otherwise messages are billed individually.

What a single RCS message can contain

One RCS message can carry far more than an SMS: an image, a rich card with a title, description and buttons, a carousel of several cards, or suggested replies such as Confirm and Reschedule. A long text message isn't split into separately billed segments as SMS is. For journeys that would otherwise need several SMS plus a link to a web page, that difference adds up.

User replies

Google's FAQ notes that carriers decide whether and how user-originated messages, such as a typed reply or a tapped suggested reply, are charged. Tapping a suggested action, such as opening a link or dialling a number, isn't a billable event. Ask your provider how replies are billed on the route you use.

The cost that per-message rates hide: reachability

An RCS message only reaches a customer whose phone, messaging app and carrier support RCS, and only once your agent has been launched for that carrier. On iPhone, Apple supports RCS from iOS 18 on carriers that enable it. Anyone who can't receive RCS needs another channel, usually SMS, so the real cost of an RCS campaign is the RCS messages that reach people plus the fallback SMS for those they don't reach.

Run a capability check on your own audience before you plan. RCS platforms let you check whether a number can receive RCS before you send, and the share of your list that passes is the number that decides your costs.

Worked examples

These examples use Messagify's published starting rates and assume, for illustration only, that 60% of the list can receive RCS. Replace that figure with the result of your own capability check.

  • Short alert (under 160 characters) to 10,000 customers. SMS only: 10,000 × ₹0.12 = ₹1,200. RCS with SMS fallback: 6,000 × ₹0.13 + 4,000 × ₹0.12 = ₹1,260. For short text the totals are close, and SMS-only is simpler.
  • Long English message (300 characters) to 10,000 customers. SMS needs two segments per person: 20,000 × ₹0.12 = ₹2,400 if your rate applies per segment. RCS with fallback: 6,000 RCS messages (₹780) plus 4,000 two-segment fallback SMS (₹960) = ₹1,740. Here RCS with fallback is cheaper.
  • Hindi offer (200 Unicode characters) with an image and a Buy button. SMS needs three segments and can only link to the image. RCS delivers it as one rich card. The more content a message carries, the more RCS saves per reachable customer.

Which should you choose?

A common setup uses both: RCS as the main channel for reachable customers, with SMS fallback built into the same workflow. Messagify supports both, through our RCS Business Messaging and SMS gateway. For a primer on the channel, read what RCS Business Messaging is.

Choose SMS when

  • The message is short, plain text and must reach every customer, such as an OTP or a critical alert.
  • You need the widest reach on basic and older phones.
  • Your DLT headers and templates are already registered and the message fits in one segment.

Choose RCS (with SMS fallback) when

  • Messages are long, in a regional language, or need images and buttons, so SMS would need several segments plus a link.
  • A verified sender name and logo help customers trust the message, for example in banking or e-commerce.
  • You want customers to act inside the message by confirming, rescheduling or buying, without opening a browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Per message, the two are close: Messagify's starting rates are ₹0.12 per SMS and ₹0.13 per RCS message. RCS often works out cheaper for long or Unicode messages, because SMS splits them into several billed segments, while SMS is simpler and cheaper for short alerts that must reach every phone.
